The Moto X first went on sale for AT&T and Verizon a couple of weeks ago, followed by Sprint last week. T-Mobile availability on Monday completes the circle of major U.S. carrier availability for Motorola’s new flagship smartphone. But if you want to get it on T-Mobile there’s a catch: It’s only available through Motorola’s website.
We learned about this shortly after Motorola announced the phone last month. T-Mobile’s Chief Marketing Officer Mike Sievert told AllThingsD, “We do not plan to stock Moto X devices immediately in our stores but are working closely with Motorola to make the Moto X a great experience for T-Mobile customers. Any news about distribution in our stores would come at a later date.”
So for now, if you want to score on a handset on T-Mobile, you’ll have to get it directly from Motorola. That’s fine, but it also looks like you’re going to have to pay the full $599.99 for the phone upfront. T-Mobile no longer subsidizes the cost of handsets, but you’re usually given the opportunity to put a certain amount of money down, then pay the device off over the course of two years. You can’t do that for the Moto X through Motorola’s website.
Additionally, if you want the phone on T-Mobile, your only color options right now are black or white (and right now Motorola lists the white phone as out of stock). The same goes for Sprint and Verizon. Only AT&T customers have access to the Moto Maker website right now, which allows you to customize the phone in over 2,000 potential unique combinations.
