Japanese conglomerate Softbank is close to acquiring a big piece of T-Mobile from parent company Deutsche Telekom, according to Reuters and other reports. Rumors that Softbank-owned Sprint was revisiting previous plans to acquire T-mobile re-surfaced earlier this month.
Softbank bought U.S. telco Sprint, for $21.6 billion in July after an 8-month process. Softbank’s stake in T-mobile has been valued at about $20 billion and would bolster Softbank chairman Masayoshi Son’s grand plan to dominate the mobile internet — provided he can overcome U.S. regulatory concerns, according to Reuters.
